ANIMAL WELFARE LEGISLATION

AWFNI representatives together with a representative from Animal Need a Voice in Legislation (ANVIL) met Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) officials at the end of January.
AWFNI and ANVIL representatives met with The Minister for the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and her officials in May.
It was indicated at both meetings that the Minister wishes to liaise with her counterpart in the Republic of Ireland on animal welfare legislation.
The ROI consultation document was issued in mid-June.  AWFNI formulated a response to this document, meeting the closing date of 12th July.  ANVIL also formulated a response to this document.

LANTRA - The Sector Skills Council for the Environment and Land-based Sector.

AWFNI has nominated a representative to this forum which usually meets twice a year, i.e., in May and December each year.

USE OF WILD ANIMALS IN TRAVELLING CIRCUSES

Following the death of circus elephant, Kenya, in August 2007, while with a travelling circus in Northern Ireland, AWFNI undertook a campaign to approach local councils to encourage them to ban such circuses from operating from council property. The ultimate aim is to campaign for a total ban in Northern Ireland.
To this end, the issue has been brought to the attention of DARD and questions have been asked in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

NORTHERN IRELAND COMPANION  ANIMAL WELFARE COMMITTEE (NICAWC)

AWFNI has a representative on this committee which was established in August 2007 -  current chairman, Steve Goody, Blue Cross.
The Animal Welfare Federation Northern Ireland was formed in January 2001 to provide both a forum and a voice for local animal sanctuaries and other animal welfare groups and charities.
